There are lots of musea in New York City. Here’s a list of New York’s “big five” musea, just to give you an impression.
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum one of the most important modern art musea in the world. It holds a lot of paintings from the 20th century and is known because of its special design; shaped as a snail’s house. Very close to Central Park. Plan ahead and get your skip-the-line tickets here. Entrance to the Guggenheim is also included in the New York City Explorer Pass. Good to know: every Saturday between 5:45 and 7:45 admission to Guggenheim is "Pay What You Wish".
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (or The Met), is one of the biggest and most important artmusea in the world with paintings and sculptures from all over the world. Good to know: admission to The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Breuer (closed Mondays) and The Met Cloisters is Pay What You Wish and one ticket will get you into all museums on the same day. How about taking a bikeride to Cloisters?
The Museum of Modern Art is one of the world’s most prominent musea for modern art. Paintings and sculptures from the 20th century, movies, pictures and an extensive collection of books. I still have a vision of Cindy Sherman’s object of art. I’m not real sure if I liked it or not, but if art is that what gets to you I say “mission completed”. Oh and whatever you do, be sure to go into the museumgiftstore filled with little ”wannahaves”….maybe you can get some good souvenirshopping done. Good to know: a ticket to MoMA will also give you same day admission to MoMA PS1 in Queens. Which we liked very much! Plan ahead and get your tickets here. MoMA is included in the New York City Explorer Pass.
The Brooklyn Museum is the 2nd largest museum in NYC (comes after The Met). It holds over 1,5 million pieces of art. Many Egyptian- and contemporary art and, how cool, the Brooklyn Museum has it’s own subwaystation (the red 2&3). Check the events before you go, there's always lots of stuff going on. From guided tours to free salsa lessons with live music. Do check out The Dinner Party, by Judy Chicago (4th floor). This is a permanent display. It's ... different ... and that's all we'll say about it.
The American Museum of Natural History the name says it all. Mammals from all over the world and remains of dinosaurs and predators of mankind. In the American Museum of Natural History, scenes were shot for many movies. Fun to do with kids (and be sure to watch “Night at the museum” first)!
